 MAME v0.270 (64-bit)
Jeudi 26/09/24 à 20:48 par Firebrand
La version mensuelle de MAME a été publiée. Les améliorations sont les suivantes:
We’re happy to announce that MAME 0.270 is ready! A lot of work has gone into a lot of different areas of MAME throughout September. One very interesting addition is the “Zoomer” PDA. Built by Casio and marketed under multiple brand names, this PDA ran MS-DOS 3.3, GEOS 2.0 and the PenRight user interface. It was one of the first PDAs to include software developed by Palm Computing. Other exotic systems include the Sony NWS-3270 workstation and 68000 development boards from Marion Systems and Motorola themselves.
The Hitachi Basic Master Jr. is now working, giving a glimpse of the Japanese home computer market in the early 1980s. UMC’s attempt at taking on Sega and Nintendo in the mid-1990s, the Super A'Can, is in a much better state than it was previously. Although it still isn’t considered working, numerous issues with graphics and sound have been addressed, and battery-backed cartridge memory is now supported. Several more Apple II input peripherals are now supported. Support for hard-sectored floppy disk formats has been added, which should open up storage options for computers from the S-100 era.
The effort to understand the IGS027A CPUs and dump their internal programs is paying off. Over a dozen slots, mahjong and card games from IGS are now playable. If you’re a fan of these games, you can now play them in the comfort of your home with no risk of blowing your paycheque.

 openMSX v20.0 - Automn Spring -
Dimanche 22/09/24 à 16:49 par Firebrand
Cet émulateur MSX et ColecoVision a été mis à jour. Les améliorations sont les suivantes:
This is a major release, in which we introduce the new Graphical User Interface, replacing the OSD menu. A faster and more powerful debugger is now included in openMSX itself. Configuration for MSX joystick/JoyMega has been improved drastically using the new GUI. As of now, a system with OpenGL 2 support is required to run openMSX.

The GUI

We already had two separate GUI applications:
- openMSX Catapult, a tool to control common functionality of openMSX, in a limited way.
- openMSX Debugger, a great and helpful tool, but never officially released and packaged.
Keeping the GUI separate from the emulation core seemed like a good idea at first. Keeping the state of both applications in sync turned out to be a hard problem, however. Functions that seemed easy, were in fact very hard to implement in this structure.
In this release we integrated the GUI directly in openMSX itself. All information is now guaranteed in sync and updated real-time (which would have been very hard in the old structure).
As this is the first release with the new GUI, not everything will be perfect straight away. Feedback or help to improve things further will be highly appreciated. The Catapult and openMSX Debugger applications remain available for the time being. We will (try to) keep them working, but they won't receive any new development anymore - from us anyway. When keeping them working becomes too much of a burden, we will abandon these applications altogether.

Joystick emulation

Another big change is the joystick emulation. There are now fixed joystick and JoyMega (MegaDrive controller) pluggables (2 for each), which can also be configured via the GUI and also support keyboard inputs, so they also replace the old keyjoystick devices. This gives optimal flexibility for configuring how you want to control MSX controllers.
On top of that, it is now possible to plug and unplug host controllers at run-time.

Rendering

Rendering has also undergone a big change. We removed the "SDL" renderer, as the GUI requires an accelerated backend, for which we use OpenGL 2, which was already required for the (already default and now only) SDLGL-PP renderer.
We also removed 1x scaling, so the minimum is now 2x. Video recording and screenshots on the 320x240 resolution are still possible, though. All of this allowed us to simplify the code a lot, making it easier to add new features and maintain the code.

Other important changes

As for any custom key bindings you might have: we renamed some keys to match the SDL library names instead of inventing our own. Old names are still recognized, but be careful if you also run older openMSX versions, as openMSX will use the new names and the old openMSX will not recognize them. Examples are: PRINT -> PrintScreen, META -> GUI.

Here's the list with all highlights and details:

MSX device support:
- OPL4: fixed detail in YMF262 register mirroring
- turboR PCM:
*fixed sample frequency to 15700Hz (not 15750Hz as found in some documentation)
*implement sample buffer (bit 0 on port 0xA5) to improve sound quality
- flash ROMs: added a lot of accuracy to its emulation
- WD2793 and TC8566AF FDC's: fixed several details
- Konami mapper: added missing mirroring
- improvements on I8254 mode 3 used in some RS-232C interfaces
- added support for the concept 16-bit NEO mappers, which may be used by
someone in the future. If this doesn't happen, support will be dropped again
- added support for the ASCII16-X mapper which will be used by some upcoming
games
- fixed mapper of Mitsubishi ML-TS2 modem software
- added support for Circuit Designer RD dongle (thanks Sandy Pleyte!)
- added new machines/extensions, thanks to:

- removed support for savestates with .xml.gz extension
- do not save SRAM to file if unmodified
- added support to run openMSX fully in headless mode
- allow to specify the device name of IDE devices in their config XML file
- base the Boosted MSX2 EN on the Philips NMS 8245 instead of 8250
- fixed crash when multiple debug-devices were used at once
- fixed possible crash on specific combination of watchpoints and replay
- fixed possible crash on no longer supported savestates: we try to keep old savestates working. Nevertheless occasionally we do remove stuff. Loading an old savestate which contains such stuff used to crash, now we give a clean error message.
- fixes for load_settings command

Build system, packaging, documentation:
- added support for loongarch
- required GNU compiler is now at least g++-11
- required clang compiler is at least clang++-16
- required Visual Studio Compiler is at least 2022
- on macOS, at least Xcode 15.4 is required
- Android build is totally broken, and will require a lot of effort and help to get back up, which is not planned by us.
- 3rd party updates of SDL (2.30.1), SDL2_ttf (2.22.0), GLEW (2.2.0)
- added patch to add aarch64 support to libtheora 3rdparty build
- fixed link error in libvorbis for Xcode 15 on macOS
- avoid pkg-config build error with Clang 15 on macOS
- quite a large update of the manual (mostly to include the new GUI)

...and of course the usual various bug fixes and performance improvements.

 pfeMAME v2.31.5
Lundi 16/09/24 à 17:13 par Firebrand
Une nouvelle version de ce frontend pour MAME a été publiée. Les chancements spécifiques de cette version ne sont pas connus, mais voici la globalité des améliorations pour la v2.31:
- Added some additional debug logging if developer mode is active
- Enabled VLC to be used for MacOS. Have tested on Intel silicon only. Seems to work ok ish.
- Fixed an issue with the selected row text color not taking user changes
- Added the ability to change the selected row background color. This was locked to the system default. Have also changed the default to something more pleasant (imho).
- Fixed a MacOS console warning relating to the vertical size of the joystick selection combobox in preferences. Just changed the vertical size to system default.
- Changed the tabs background area color to the control bar color for all tabbed controls. This allows for better contrast and ‘view ability’, especially in dark mode.
- Changed the way the MAME executable is looked for in Filapaths. I was previously incorrectly assuming that only Linux required it to be located in the system path (So that you can just run MAME from the command line and it works regardless of what the current folder is). As I have found out, some installs under MacOS install it in the system path rather than just in a folder (e.g. MacPorts). The new change looks for the executable firstly as a file in the folder you have set as the MAME folder. If it can’t find it there then it checks to see if it’s in the system path. If it still can’t find it, then you will just need to find it yourself.
- Made the RED background highlight around the filepaths icon flash to make it more obvious for first time setup that the filepaths are where you need to start.
- Added by build_source_distribution.py file to the source distributions
- The python modules ffmpeg-python and python-vlc are now compulsory if you are building a distribution executable. This ensures that the required include files are added to the build.
- Fixed duplicate message logging after auto-restart
- Updated the manual to include detail in the Full Screen Video Player section relating to displaying metadata needing ffprobe (of ffmpeg for Linux)
- Fixed an issue where the buttons at the bottom of the Filepaths window were greyed out in some situations (They were still useable, but the GUI needed to be refreshed to redraw them correctly)
- Fixed a bug that would cause Filepaths to crash out if you had selected ‘Clear All’ and then re-run it without setting the INI path to a valid path.
- In Filepaths, any invalid or missing paths are highlighted RED. This doesn’t mean it’s a critical issue, just that this particular path is not set.
- Improved MacOS ability to find the ffprobe application that you should copy to the pfeMAME folder.
- Fixed a bug that could cause a KeyError on some video files when trying to get matadata that isn’t present or the file is not formatted correctly.
- Fixed a crash that would occur when using the Fullscreen video player under MacOS. Not a Mac bug, but I wasn’t handling a send to the main screen messages window correctly. Doing it from a thread in a non-thread-safe manner was a bad idea. Have used wx.CallAfter now to correct this. Pretty big oversight.
- Updated the manual based on recent changes and added improved detail around the Full Screen Video Player ffprobe support.
- Fixed a major bug that was causing Linux installs to save the pfeMAME.ini file in the wrong path when setting up file paths. This then stopped the file paths process from working. Seems it was specific to certain builds and configuration types as I had not seen it previously.

 WinUAE v5.3.1 Beta 1
Lundi 16/09/24 à 17:03 par Firebrand
Un nouveau cycle de beta commence pour cet émulateur Amiga. Les améliorations sont les suivantes:
- Added support for Picmatic Marbelle Vice and Tierras Salvajes 100Hz TV laser disc arcade games. 100Hz TV versions use external hardware to read lightgun positions. All older games use Amiga built-in lightgun support hardware (+external switch to select between player 1 and 2 guns)
- Fixed GamePorts panel "Swap ports".
- Some screen resolution/font combinations caused crash when on screen keyboard was opened.
- Fixed music glitch in James Pond 2 (non-AGA). Probably affected other interrupt based music players too. (5300b5)
- Prometheus Firestorm PCI bridge interrupt state bit was inverted.
- Implemented Mediator 1200TX second PCI window in 8M mode. (First 4M is first window, second 4M is second window), second window is normally mapped after first bank, emulating pre-1200TX hardware which only have one 8M window.
- S3 Virge PCI missed one byteswapping mode.
- If config with Golem SCSI II HD controller was loaded, it changed to HD3000. SCSI II had same internal name prefix as Golem HD3000.
- Fixed SPRxPOS modification in last possible moment being missed causing sprite to be disabled. (Reshoot R background flickering)
- Copper COPJMP1 and COPJMP2 strobed with DMA disabled is accurately emulated. Old and wrong "Copper stops when this happens" was not fully removed when correct behavior was added (Copper does not stop but jumps to address COP1LC OR COP2LC. Which usually as a side-effect stops it quite quickly because MOVE to "dangereous" register is very likely). Copper only stops when writing to (or "skipping") write to "dangerous" register.
- Allow 16-bit color depth only in Direct3D 9 mode. GDI and D3D11 force 32-bit depth.
- Serial transmit (in non-direct mode) now in average matches SERPER bit rate. Previously it was always slightly faster. Receive rate (in non-direct) is now throttled to max SERPER/4 rate instead of receiving new byte byte immediately after previous receive interrupt was cleared. Rate needs to be less than SERPER because it is meant for be very compatible with external serial connection without random buffer overflows.
- In fastest CPU mode, when there is free time at the end of scanline, skip event handling for few wait loops to improve performance.
- Fixed possible crash when AmigaOS 4 resets and switches to PPC mode if directory filesystem emulation was in use.
- Added GVP T-Rex II accelerator board ROM. It is very similar to TekMagic.
- Added "v1.0" DKB Wildfire ROM image (previously known was renamed as v1.1, it is larger and has new disabled Display options menu item but unfortunately all internal versions numbers are identical to v1.0)
- Implemented OpalVision undocumented automatic VRAM bank switch when VRAM address wraps around and fixed ignored VRAM address load command if it was located in second control line. Both features are used in King of Karate to have wider than screen scrolling background. Previously background was not scrolling.

 Clock Signal 08/09/2024
Mercredi 11/09/24 à 16:45 par Firebrand
Cet émulateur multi-systèmes pour MacOS a été mis à jour. Les améliorations sont les suivantes:
08/09/2024:
- replaces the Electron's previous implementation of video output with one closely modelled on @moogway82's JamSoftElectronULA, itself a derivative of @hoglet67's ElectronFpga. It thereby substantially improves compatibility with recent Electron demos such as @0xC0DE6502's basketball.

27/08/2024:
- corrects a bug that could cause half-screen games to flicker on the Acorn Electron;
- improves automatic machine selection between the ZX Spectrum +3 and CPC for a large category of self-booting disk image; and
- corrects 65C02 bus behaviour during BBR and BBS instructions, improving emulation accuracy of the Enhanced Apple IIe.
